Are you searching for a way to live longer, feel younger, and have better quality of life as you grow older? We are now familiar with what has been termed the French Paradox, that refers to the low rate of heart disease given the dietary lifestyle in that part of the world. Eating more cheese, butter, eggs, and other fatty foods that would normally be associated with increased heart disease does not hold true there. Is the difference related to the amount of wine that is consumed? In America we eat the same fatty foods and possibly worse.

But then, as I looked down I did a double take; noticing there was the usual leash loop sensibly tightly secured in the usual place on my left wrist. But to my horror the remainder length of the leash was dangling SOLO in the breeze. And no animal attached!! Fearing the worst, I did a quick eyeball once-over on the block. Most of my childhood was spent in West Philadelphia on Cambridge Street. We were a city block of neat row houses all painted and bricked in a similar manner. Back in the mid 1950’s and early 1960’s there were lots of children on Cambridge Street. All the families knew each other and adults disciplined any child on the block. For the most part, the kids were well behaved with a notable exception. We all teased the old lady in the window.

Roman Polanski is an acclaimed Oscar winning Film Director. He is the man responsible for films like Chinatown and The Pianist He is also the man who admitted the drugging and sexual abuse of a thirteen year old girl, while he was photographing her for a magazine in 1977. He fled the USA before he could be sentenced and has been openly ‘on the run’ ever since, living mainly in France. Last weekend, he was detained in Switzerland while travelling to the Zurich Film Festival where he was expected to receive a Lifetime Achievement award.

Statistics tell us that more than 35 million people are afflicted with Alzheimers disease. Practically every family is touched by this cruel illness that robs people of their loved ones long before death takes them away. My own family is dealing with Alzheimers on several fronts. My cousin, Edna, from Maui and I spent several days together last week discussing how she is coping with her mother’s illness.

There are lots of ways you can volunteer your time, you can donate money, you can take part in research trials, but here is one you might not have thought of, you can use your computers free memory to help scientists study protein folding. To do this you need to have a new computer (2-3 years old) at least a Pentium 3, with a broadband internet connection. You also need to be confident enough to download and install a program called “ Folding@home ” from the internet and alter your anti-virus settings.

$6B deal would be North Chicago firm’s 2nd-largest acquisition Abbott Laboratories announced Monday morning the purchase of the pharmaceutical business of Belgian plastics and chemical giant Solvay SA for $6.6 billion in cash for the second-largest acquisition in company history. A deal between Solvay and Abbott makes sense, analysts said, because the two have a partnership to market cholesterol drugs. Abbott, for example, licenses from Solvay the rights to Tricor, a cholesterol pill that generates more than $1 billion in annual sales.
